The Thread That Runs Through It All
Across every role and every industry, one conviction has held: businesses improve when people can see clearly. His approach has evolved across three eras:
- Data to enable leadership — building systems that surface what matters to decision-makers.
- Systems to improve insight at all levels — giving every layer of the organisation visibility into performance.
- AI to remove the mundane — stripping away repetitive work so capable people have the leverage they deserve.
Systems He Has Built
Jéan has been building practical systems since his university days — each one solving a real operational problem, whether for his own management or for clients:
Library & Books Management System
Faculty of Military Science, University of Stellenbosch
Managed the faculty library — cataloguing, lending and tracking — built while completing his B.Mil degree.
Rapid Response Stores Management System
Parachute Forces, South African Defence Force
Managed the carrying and allocation of fighting equipment for fire forces, enabling fast deployment readiness — a logistics system where speed and accuracy had real consequences.
Plant Maintenance System — Koo & All Gold
Canning factory, South Africa
Managed plant maintenance scheduling, work orders and equipment tracking in a high-throughput food processing environment.
Project Initiative Tracking System
Iscor Steel
Developed as the outflow of an IT Strategy engagement, where Jéan served as both Project Manager and systems architect. Tracked strategic initiatives from concept through to delivery and benefits realisation.
KPA-to-KPI Definition, Tracking & Dashboard Systems
Multiple departments and clients
Defined Key Performance Areas, linked them to measurable KPIs, and built dashboards extracting data from ERPs and other sources — from open-source solutions through to Microsoft SQL Server and Power BI.
Notable Projects
The types of projects Jéan has sold and led bring an extra dimension of credibility — complex, multi-stakeholder, transformation-heavy engagements:
| Year | Duration | Project | Client | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1994 | 6 months | IT Strategy to align to new business strategy and harvest emerging technologies | Iscor Steel | Project Manager |
| 1995 | 1 year | Implement the IT Strategy through portfolio management of initiatives | Iscor Steel | Project Manager |
| 1996 | 4 months | IT Strategy | Iscor Mining | Project Manager |
| 1996 | 2.5 years | Bringing together front-office applications for four banks that amalgamated into one | ABSA | Project Manager |
| 1998–2000 | 3 years | COO — digital services company leadership | e-volution | COO |
He also led large-scale outsourcing transitions for organisations like Eskom and Transnet (five-year deals), and drove the GE and Deloitte partnerships that took digital transformation and Industry 4.0 thinking into mining.
